Backgroundto Project • Rooted in the regeneration of Limerick City • Hope to add value to the master plan and/or city of learning framework • 10 year strategy (initial phase of 3 years) • Commitment from the Institutions to the project • Develop opportunities, pathways, choices and outcomes for all learners from regeneration learners
Background to the Project • To enhance the landscape of education in Limerick to ensure that learners have the opportunity to realise their right to an education that meets their needs • Targeting all levels of education • Collaboration at all levels and stages with a bottom up approach to our work

Civic Voice Develop an educational future for learners that • is not just an improvement, • but one of a different nature from what we now have
Educational Disadvantage in Ireland • 25% of the population between the ages of 16 and 25 is functionally illiterate (O’ Brien and Ó Fathaigh: 2007) • One in seven citizens, aged between 15 – 64 years, has completed at most a primary education (CSO:2008) • 11% of the population aged 18-24 is defined as an early school leaver (CSO:2008) • Of those leaving school in 2006, 15% left school having completed only a lower secondary education. A further 4% left with no qualifications whatsoever (ESRI:2008)
Limerick • Of those who have ceased education in the city of Limerick, the percentage with lower secondary level education or less is 41% • This figure rises to two out of every three individuals in the electoral districts covering the Regeneration communities • 2.6% of those who have ceased education across the city have attained a post-graduate qualification – 1% in Regeneration Communities (Census 2002) • ESL – 4% points higher than national average (HSE Health Promotion Unit: Forthcoming)
