TIPS • read the prompt like a text • understand what its components offer you. • Differentiate between any "lead-in" that merely provides an access point ("food for thought") and any part of the prompt that provides instructions. • Biggest mistakes? not reading to the end of the prompt, and not paying attention to what the argument was supposed to be about.
Starting the Essay • Critically read the passage and underline anything that clearly defines the author’s claim • Set forth your immediate reaction to the issue in a few words –ADQ • List viable, thoughtful examples you can use to help illustrate your argument • Examples in the essay should be included with elaboration and commentary, identifying their relevance to and importance in your argument.
