Our Community Partner • The Waters Church • Located in Sartell, MN • Affiliated with the assemblies of God
About the Waters Church… • It all started in the winter of ’06.. When Pastor Doug Vagle and his wife Peggy felt god calling them to this community. • Three children, Abby, Nat, and Sophia • One Dog, KoKo • The Vagles love hanging out with each other, their kids, friends and family!
Their Mission • LOVE GOD • LOVE PEOPLE • LOVE LIFE
Some beliefs of the church.. • They believe in doing everything through the power of prayer and that prayer changes everything. • Excellence honors God and inspires people. • They believe people matter to god. Even if they don’t know it yet. That is why they are committed to letting people know through AUTHENTIC experience, AUTHENTIC community, and AUTHENTIC investment.
Authentic Experience • Relevant Preaching • Using creative methods to apply God’s unchanging message to our lives today. • Meaningful and personal worship • “The more we seek him, the more we find him..” (Pastor Doug)
Authentic Community • Life Groups – “We all have a longing to know and be known. We want to see every person connect with someone else on their journey to connect with god.” (Pastor Doug) • Men's groups- “ To build Godly men” • Women’s groups- “ Her place to connect with god, with others, with herself” • Kid’s groups (K-6) • H2O Kid’s church • Student Ministry groups • Special interest and support groups • Family development- “ Kids and teens are the future! We need to prepare them today.” (Pastor Doug)
Authentic Investment • Leadership • Missions • Making a difference in our world near and far.
Service Learning Project • We connected with the Waters Church to discuss suicide. • Researched and talked about the statistics of suicide. • Talked with people that have experienced a loved one who has committed suicide.
Interesting Suicide facts • Estimates that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 people per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds. • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers. (NIMH) • Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide. (NIMH)
More facts • 121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. ( The World Health Organization) • Depression often co-occurs with anxiety disorders and substance abuse, with 30 percent of teens with depression also developing a substance abuse problem.
Suicide Awareness Walk • We put on and assisted with the organization of a four mile suicide awareness walk that took place on June 5th, 2010. • It started at 10am at the Waters Church • Food and beverages followed the event
Suicide Awareness Walk • Our Goals • Walk to show respect to those who have lost a loved one to suicide • Show the community we care • Spread the word • “Hope for tomorrow”
Outcome • After experiencing this, we have decided to hold this walk annually. • New friends were made, bonds were formed and knowledge was attained.
