  2. Poetry is… • Like putting an IKEA bed together. (Carl Leggo) • How would you interpret this definition? • May appear simple • Tricky to assemble • Uninspiring? • Perfectly designed?

  3. My grandmother’s collection of recipes stained with the ingredients that smudge her handwritten notes

  4. A DJ spinning, grooving and synchronizing beats on his turntable. • How might you interpret this definition?

  5. Like riding horseback in the rain, without reins, for the first time

  6. Define poetry • Come up with your own definition of poetry • Describe what it is • You are not expressing an opinion; you are writing a definition • Write your definition on an 8 ½ X 11 sheet (in large letters) • Consider using a simile or metaphor • Use concrete images to explain your definition

  7. It’s sticky time • Take a gallery walk around the posted definitions • Peruse the definitions, read the thoughts • Take several sticky notes and make comments about others’ definitions • Eg. How do you connect to the definition? Do you question a definition? What image does the definition elicit for you? • As a class, what student statements resonated with you? Why?

  8. Read some poems… • Turn to Anthology of Verse and read:
