Significance of His Names • Wonderful Counselor: emphasizes His perfect plan • Mighty God: emphasizes His power to accomplish the plan • His nature is both human and divine
I. Mighty God Does Not Refer To: 1. Arianism: < Arius: the Father alone is God; Jesus is a creature JW on Jn.1:2: “Since Jehovah is eternal and had no beginning…the Word’s being with God from the‘beginning’ must here refer to the beginning of Jehovah’s creative works” (Aid To Bible Und., 918) “Scriptural evidence indicates that the nameMichael applied to God’s Son before he left heaven to become Jesus Christ…”
2. Apollinarianism: Denied completeness of Christ’s humanity and possibility of joining two wholes in one whole [But: Son is born…Immanuel] 3. First Person of Godhead But: Chap.7, Jesus Also: Lk.1:32-33 applies Is.9:6-7 to Jesus
4. Pentecostalism(one Person in Godhead: Father is Son, etc.) 5. A mere human judge “Godlike Hero”: man w. superhuman qualities OT predicts divine Messiah Isaiah never uses El of a man (cf. Is.10:21; 31:3, ct. w. man) 6. Paganism. Zeus…lesser gods
