  1. 3) Prolepsis- CH 2/3 • Through the withholding of catharsis within Roseanne’s dictation it produces a ticking clock in the form of a crescendo to the pinnacle of the reveal. (Dr Grene is her son); A02- Struct • The symbiotic connection within the narrative voices produces dramatic irony for second reading ‘She has been a fixture, and not only represents the institution, but also, in a curious way, my own history, my own life’- pg 17 Links to the idea of family history and the lack of revealing the truth using asyndeton. • Direct address ‘Dear reader!’- pg 24, ambiguity over whether she knows who she is addressing and the purpose of her story. Creates an understanding of the possibility she has a relationship with Dr Grene on a personal level (as her son) or on a professional level (as her therapist). • 2) Synaesthesia- CH1/2 • The emotive language creates an intense feminine exposition which immediately forms a relationship between the reader and the pivotal character, Roseanne ; A02- Lang • ‘Like the pebbles on the beach disturbed by the waves, rushing, shushing, a soft sound that sounds in my dreams’- pg 21 Evocative figurative language, Ocean motif recurrent representing desire for freedom. Note the sibilance in the quotation that reflects the movement and sounds of the waves showing the ebbing nature of Roseanne’s life. • Intro • The crescendo creates ambiguity and the essential themes through these devices; • Synaesthesia • Prolepsis • Idealism Q. What is the significance in the ways writers begin their narratives? • Conflicting Structures- A03 • There are two narrative voices; • Dr Grene represents the post Freudian chronological order which appears in the form of a masculine clinical nature which is analytical and factual based. • In comparison Roseanne’s style is more chaotic and Post modern form in a feminine fluent style of writing which is Victorian romanticism. This introduces the idea of a binary opposition between Irish vsEnglish as they are known for their differing character traits. • This form also weaves insanity throughout the plot due to the constant switching from past to present as well as between narrative voices. • 4) Idealism- CH2 • Questioning appearance vs reality due to the homodiegetic narration and the therefore implementation that she is an unreliable character questions her recollection of memory and distinguishes and reminds the reader of her old age but child like memory; A02- Lang/ Struct • ‘I was bursting to see the outcome of that elegant experiment, an outcome my father had said might stand to me in my life’- pg 23Introduces the binary oppositions of innocence vs corruption and the idea of a childish illusion under the pretence that good and evil are on one level. • Thematic Conclusion- A03 • Appearance vs reality • Youth vs old. • Parallelism and similarities between the two narrative voices shows a longing connection from the beginning. • Roseanne’s attachment to her childhood and Dr Grene’s longing for maternal attachment concludes to the question • ‘Do we all create a maternal/childhood desire through presence of absence or old age?’
