Publishing Quizzes or Surveys into ELMS with Respondus “How Do I?” Webinar February 23, 2010 Presented by Sharon Roushdy OIT Learning Technologies Group
What is Respondus? Respondus is a time saving application that allows you to import and then publish questions from a document, such as a Word or a text (.txt) file, directly into the Test/Survey tool in ELMS (powered by Blackboard).
Getting Started • Respondus is licensed by OIT, and is free to faculty and staff. • OIT LT support web site at: http://otal.umd.edu/respondus-otal • Download from: http://otal.umd.edu/respondus_req_download (avoid using IE 8; insteadtry Firefox, IE 7, Safari, Chrome) • After installing, use the license information and code to register the software
Prepare Your Questions • File formats • .doc, .docx, .txt, .rtf • Images and text formatting • Word (.doc, docx) files accept inserted images and text formatting • Text (.txt) and Rich-text (.rtf) files require HTML code
How To: • Import/Publish Questions with Respondus: http://otal.umd.edu/sites/default/files/materials/respondus/import_publish_to_ELMS.pdf (or go to otal.umd.edu, and look under Supported Tools on the left) • Using the ELMS Quiz/Survey Tool http://otal.umd.edu/sites/default/files/materials/elms/elms_docs/ELMS_quizzes_surveys_Bbv8_v2.pdf (or go to elms.umd.edu, and look under the Training tab)
Online Quizzing Issues & Tips • Lack of security if unproctored • Cheating: printing, sharing with others, looking up answers, etc. • Possibility of technology glitches • Browser settings and incompatibility • Internet connection • Computer configuration • User error • Best for low-stakes quizzes, self-assessments, and surveys
Strategies to Reduce Tech. Problems • Give an initial try-out quiz • Give students quiz taking tips: https://elms.umd.edu/bbcswebdav/orgs/LTWS/student/studentrec_testtaking.pdf • Offer to drop one or two quizzes • Reward students for not having problems (eg, bonus points, skip a quiz) • Do not use the “Force Completion” setting under the Modify button.
Strategies to Reduce Cheating • Avoid unproctored high-stakes objective tests • Make it harder to cheat, if unproctored: • Time the quizzes • Randomize questions • Display questions one-at-time
