DO NOW Using your ruler, find the area to the nearest whole cm2 of one surface of the Lego cube. Hint: Area = length x width When you finish, find the area of ALL the surfaces. If you broke up the cube would there be more surface area or the same amount?
Surface area is the measure of how much exposed area a solid object has or the area of all of the outside surfaces of a three-dimensional object. A cube has six square faces. Like dice. Let’s flatten the cube out. If each of those faces is 3 inches by 3 inches, then the area of each face is 3 × 3 = 9 square inches. And since there are six of them, the total surface area is 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 54 square inches.
Do Now • Discuss with your elbow buddy: Your stomach and esophagus use muscles to break up food. Why is this necessary in the stomach and the esophagus, once you have already swallowed food? • Use the Lego cube to help you.
Mechanical Digestion • Mechanical means moving parts – mechanical pencil, mechanic, mechanical toys • Food is broken into smaller pieces by moving parts or muscles. For example, the chewing of the teeth, churning of the stomach and mashing of the tongue. • Surface area: the area of all the surfaces of an object • Mechanical vs. chemical digestion animation

See if your elbow buddy agrees with you. Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may need to check your notes for the kinds of foods which contain carbohydrates. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate.
