  2. Who Was Van Gogh? • A Dutch Painter • A poor artist who lived in the Netherlands and in France from 1853 to 1891. • He never sold a painting in his life, but is now one of the most famous painters in the world. And his art work sells for up to as much as $82.5 million. • He tried many different jobs before becoming a artist: Art dealer, minister, and bookkeeper.

  3. How can we tell a painting is done by Van Gogh?

  4. Where did he paint the sunflowers? • Outside in Arles, France. • A town where he went to rest and recuperate from his mental illness.

  5. Positive Space=The space occupied by and object. Negative Space=The space around an object. Space

  6. Tint=Mixing white with a hue (or a color) to make it appear lighter. Shade=Mixing black with a hue to make it appear darker. What is a tint/shade?

  7. What is the positive space and what is the negative space?

  8. Day 1: The Profile • After Ms. Farley traces your profile onto a sheet of paper, cut it out. • Place it in the center of the paper with the face side out and trace with a pencil. • Flip the cut out and trace it again. • Use a ruler to draw a line that skips over the vase to draw the table.

  9. Day 2: Lines and Outline • Use a variety of lines (straight, zigzag, curly, wavy, dotted) to decorate vase. • Use a black Sharpie to outline the lines.

  10. Day 3: Color in the vase • Use crayons to color in the vase. • Press hard. • Do not leave any white spaces.

  11. Day 4: • Use the oil pastels to draw sunflowers. (Try to do some from the side and some head on). • Draw a center that is a different color than the petals. • Add stems.

  12. Day 5: Paint a tint. • Using watercolors, paint in a background. • Observe that the more water you use, the lighter the color becomes. This is a tint. When you mix a color with white, it becomes a tint.
