National School Lunch Program • Established in 1946. • “As a measure of national security, to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation’s children.” (Gunderson, 1971) • Federally subsidized meal programs have since expanded to include school breakfast as well as after-school and summer options. (David, 2011)
School Breakfast Program • Piloted in 1966 • Done in areas where children had long bus rides and regions with many working mothers • In 1975 it became a permanent entitlement program • Omaha Public Schools introduced complimentary breakfast in 1997 • Different schools were slowly phased in
Reality • 31 million students participated in the National School Lunch Program in 2007-2008 • 18 million are from low income families • Only ½ of low income students participate in the breakfast program • 1 in 6 participate in summer nutrition programs
Missing Breakfast • Children who skip breakfast are less able to distinguish among similar images, show increased errors, and have slower memory recall • Children experiencing hunger have lower math scores and are more likely to have to repeat a grade • Children that are undernourished are more likely to be suspended and have difficulty getting along with other children
Importance of Breakfast • Perform better on standardized tests • Improve their speed and memory in cognitive tests • Have better math grades, attendance, and punctuality • Perform better on mental tasks and respond better to frustration
School Breakfasts Move From Cafeteria to Class • In an effort to increase participation in school breakfast programs and nurture academic success, a new initiative is moving meals from the cafeteria to an educational environment students know best: the classroom (Anderson 2011)
Grab and Go Breakfast What is it…. • It’s a new way of serving breakfast to students to ensure they begin the day with a healthy meal • It is a way to increase participation in the breakfast program • It is a way to get the day started more quickly, calmly, and productively
Grab and Go Breakfast • Schools that provide breakfast in the classroom show a decrease in tardiness and suspensions as well as improved behavior and attentiveness • Schools that provide a universal school breakfast have higher breakfast participation, especially when it is served in the classroom. • Schools providing all students with free breakfast have greater positive changes in academic performance.
Grab and Go Breakfast • Schools that have breakfast in the classroom report decreases in discipline and psychological problems, visits to school nurses, tardiness, increases in student attentiveness and attendance, and generally better learning environment • Breakfast in the classroom has shown reduce risk of childhood obesity • Schools with breakfast in the classroom report a more relaxed start to the day
How it works • Students arrive at school for breakfast. They get in line and grab their “to go bag”
How it works • The students decide if they would like hot or cold breakfast • They grab a milk and continue on through the line
How it works • Students grab the meal of their choice and put it in their “to go bag”
How it works • Students proceed to the classroom with breakfast in hand • They are greeted by the teacher and they put their things in their locker
How it works • Students begin eating their breakfast • Students who choose not to participate in breakfast, may begin their assigned work
How it works • When students are finished with breakfast, they throw away any left over food and recycle all other materials
Menu • The Grab and Go Breakfast program offers the same menu options, with a few slight adjustments, as all other Omaha Public Schools • Hot options are prepackaged or put in a sleeve to make travel to the classrooms handy
Teacher Expectations • Greet students in the hall before they arrive in the classroom in the morning • Allow students time to eat their breakfast • Teach students the rules of the program • Call engineer if spills occur
Concerns for the Program • Spills are cleaned up immediately by the engineer • Trash is recycled in bins in the hallway • Students are able to begin their work immediately when finished eating or not participating in the program • Cleaning supplies are available in each classroom • Students are taught classroom expectations for the Grab and Go breakfast program
