Hydraulic Fracturing By Joe Clancy
How it work’s. Hydraulic fracturing makes it possible to produce oil and natural gas in places where conventional technologies are ineffective. It uses water pressure, under tight controls, to create fractures in rock that let the oil and natural gas it contains to escape and flow out of a well. For this process the workers have to drill down 8,000 feet, drinking water in 1,000 feet down.. It takes 1-8 million gallons of water to frack a well. A well may be fracked up to 18 times. For each fracture, 80-300 tons of chemicals may be used. The natural gas industry does not have to disclose the chemicals used, but scientists have identified volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene. Only 30-50% of the water is recovered from a well. This wastewater can be highly toxic.
