Urgent need for proper recycling of electronic waste • The dumping of e-waste without recycling causes serious environmental and health problems. • Only 20% of e-waste gets processed correctly. • Our landfills are getting polluted by electronic waste. • Landfill Facts; • According to the EPA the U.S generates more than 256 million tons of waste per year. • 80% of the total e-waste end up in landfills • That is more that 10 million tons! • E-waste constitutes 2% of total waste in landfills but is responsible for 70% of toxic contamination within the landfills.
Environmental Impact • While volume for municipal waste continues to decrease year by year, in contrary e-waste has turn into the fastest growing municipal waste stream in the U.S • Toxics released at landfills make their way down to our ground water, polluting it.
Health Risks • E-waste contains hazardous components that pose a serious threat to our health when expose. • Substances like lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, halogenated chemicals and many organic polymers are all found in electronic devices; emitting radiation.
E-Waste Exposure • Some of the several hazardous components that are found in e-waste include Lead, Mercury, cadmium, beryllium emitting radiation. • Lead exposure can cause serious defects in child development and the Nervous System in Adults and Children. • Mercury exposure affects the nervous with symptoms that include: tremors; emotional changes neuromuscular ,headaches; disturbances in sensations; changes in nerve responses; performance deficits on tests of cognitive function. At higher exposures there may be kidney effects, respiratory failure and death. • Beryllium is consider a carcinogen that affects the lungs. • The mixture of all components emit radiation • Radiation exposure can cause birth defects and could trigger cancer, the most strongly linked to radiation exposure in studies include: • Lung cancer • Skin Cancer • Thyroid Cancer • Multiple myeloma • Breast Cancer • Stomach Cancer
