Study Circles Goal To remove racial and ethnic barriers to student achievement and family engagement in Washoe County School District
Study Circles Objectives • To build lasting relationships among diverse stakeholders • To help parents, staff, and students become more aware of the issues, their own beliefs, and the perspectives of people who are from different backgrounds. • To develop action plans that will address racial and ethnic barriers to student achievement and family engagement.
Outcomes of Study Circles • Increase communication between parents and staff from different backgrounds. • Increase participation from parents of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. • Development of action plans to improve the academic performance of African American, Native American and Latino students.
Outreach Dialogue Action
The Program • Fifteen participants • Parents and Staff. Students Only. Parents, Students & Staff. • Represents the racial/ethnic diversity of the school community. • Six two-hour sessions • Two trained facilitators to keep everyone safe and conversation productive.

Student only circles • Spanish Springs High School To facilitate dialogue between minority youth . One full day session
How Study Circles Help Schools • Enhance awareness. Post surveys show that teachers better understand the impact of race on school success.
How Study Circles Help Schools • Improvement of relationships between parents and school staff that developed into working relationships to improve student achievement.
How Study Circles Help Schools • Personal and group action, parents sought better partnerships and as a group with school staff put forth school initiatives to enhance parent participation.
Vaughn Middle School • One of the recommendations that came from Study Circles was that we come up with a way for students to be able to track and know their testing data. The Counselors created the Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) folder for each student. This plan is also shared with their parents.
