Quiz Why is the first barrel in the process section (feed barrel) not heated ? If the feed barrel were heated, the feed-in polymer powder would adhere to the feed opening and melt. As a result a wall layer would build up and the diameter of the feed inlet would continuously shrink. Last Update: 01.2003/by:MK<Kap>.11
Quiz What prevents the heat expanding from screw barrel no.2 into the only cooled screw barrel no.1 ? An insulating plate with a thickness of 1.5 mm is fitted between the feed barrel and barrel 2. This prevents the temperature of the barrel expanding to the feed barrel. Last Update: 01.2003/by:MK<Kap>.12

Standard Screw Tip • With the 8-0 piece the screw points form the transition zone from twin screw to round. • Rotating at high circumferential speeds, the tips should not exert any negative influence on the polymer melting charge which flows relatively slowly in an axial direction. • Conventional conical screw points result in non-uniform melt temperatures, product is heated excessively near tip surface. • Radial mixing no longer takes -> melt inhomogenities occur. Mixing Screw Tips Last Update: 01.2003/by:MK<Kap>.16
Mixing Screw Tips • ... do reduce heating of the melting charge • ... ensure intensive radial mixing, which has a • ... have a temperature compensation effect • ... reduce melt inhomogeneities • ... increase improve product quality Last Update: 01.2003/by:MK<Kap>.17
