Useful applications for IG-BAN Young Hyeog Jeon, Eunkyo Kim and Donghee ShimLG Electronics
Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [IG-BAN applications: use cases] Date Submitted: [November, 2006] Source: [Young Hyeog Jeon, Eunkyo Kim and Donghee Shim] Company: [LG Electronics] Contact:Young Hyeog Jeon Voice:[+8225264151], E-Mail:[yohaness@lge.com] Abstract: [Discussions on some applications related to body area networks (BAN)] Purpose: [To provide some application examples for BAN] Notice:Possible enhancements compared to 802.15.4 are summarized
Agenda • Scenario 1 : In Music CD store • Scenario 2 : At the Art Gallery • Scenario 3 : On the bus stop • Scenario 4 : In the car • Benefit • Direct use of 15.4 MAC intothe that of BAN?
Browsing music samples Scenario Flow When Young Hyeog enters a music CD store, he receives a BAN capable headset (or he is wearing his BAN capable headset already) Finding several interesting new albums, he is feeling like trying selected sample tracks Touching music albums, he can enjoy some sample tracks through BAN capable headset Scenario 1 : In Music CD store
Scenario 2 : At the Art Gallery • Listening to the explanation of the art at the museum • Scenario Flow • Entering Van Gogh Museum, Eunkyo receives a BAN capable headset (or she is wearing her own BAN headset already) • Under each picture frame, a BAN user interface, e.g. a button, is available • She can listen to the explanation of a piece of Van Gogh’s work by touching the button
Scenario3 : On the bus stop • Listen to the bus schedule information, e.g., bus number for certain destination, arrival time etc, at the bus stop • Scenario Flow • Donghee has his own BAN device • He searches the destination information and his schedule (possibly any map data) in the web with BAN capable laptop and download into the BAN device • When he arrives a bus stop, he touch a button at the stop. • Then he can listen to the explanation of bus information for his destination
Car Management System User preference configuration Scenario 4 : In the car • In the car, BAN device can transmit user preferences data such as seat angle and handle position, then car system operates properly according to the downloaded data when a user sits. • A person can configure his/her preferences using BAN capable laptop or mobile device etc and download data to the BAN device
Benefit • Ultra Low Power • Consume about 5% of Bluetooth power based on internal experimental results • User can enjoy the long-time battery life, e.g., for listening to the music (scenario 1) • Easy to Use and Very Convenient • Don’t need to take something out or to write/input information since BAN interacts directly with human • Consequently, user interface, e.g. touch screen, is very user-friendly and convenient (scenario 2 and 3) • Custom made information based on the preference of each individual can be extracted from the BAN • Recently user preferences become more emphasized • In consequence, BAN can interact with other outside networks to reflect each individual’s preference, (e.g. car operation initialization as described in scenario 4, user-oriented output as depicted in scenario 3)
Thoughts • Analyzed benefits from several use cases are actually high-level requirements to be achieved in the BAN • Re-use of currently available 15.x MAC in the that of BAN would be considered to meet the requirements in the BAN • Initially, 15.4 MAC could be considered one of candidates for the use of that of BAN because of its low-power nature, however, some challenges should be resolved.
