Teratogens • Definition: substance increasing risk for prenatal abnormalities • Critical periods: time when organ or body part is most susceptible • Interaction effects • Caution is best
Birth Complications • Apgar scale: 7 out of 10 is OK • Sleeper effects • Washout effects • Perinatal Anoxia • Increased inattention throughout life • Infancy: Sensory and motor difficulties • Age 3: Cognitive deficits • Age 7: Social skill deficits
