  3. Introduction • Hello! Welcome to a history lesson a day with the Homo Erectus people. You will learn about what they ate, what they look like, where they lived, and much more! We hope you learn a lot and have fun with Homo Erectus!

  4. Dates and Places of Existence • The Homo Erectus people lived in Africa between 1,600,000 BCE and about 300,000 BCE.(1) The Homo Erectus people soon moved to Asia and Europe as the climate got colder.(2)

  5. Description of Physical Appearance Homo Erectus had large brains. Their brain size was form 54-67 cubic inches, which was larger than the brain of a Homo Habilis. Homo Erectus people had smaller teeth than Homo Habilis, but larger than modern humans’ teeth. Homo Erectus people had a very thick skull with a sloping forehead and large eyebrows. They also had massive jaws and had no chin. Additionally, they had flat faces and were taller than early groups of humans and had shorter arms. They weighed about 100 to 150 pounds. (3)

  6. Description of Shelters • Homo Erectus people lived in Africa. Their homes were often found in forests, plains, and grasslands. Scientists believe that these people lived in oval huts and caves. (4) Scientists also believed that the oval huts were made out of straw and grass. It is thought that these oval huts and caves were long lasting. (5)

  7. Food • Homo Erectus women would pick nuts, leaves, and fresh fruit, while the men hunted for already dead animals.(6) Later, men created tools, such as axes and clubs. They used the tools for hunting animals that were alive rather than dead.(7)

  8. Description of Daily Life • The Homo Erectus men went out in small groups looking for dead animals and learned to make tools. The woman watched the kids, searched for food such as leafs, fruit, and nuts. They also made clothing.(8)

  9. Tools • Homo Erectus people didn’t have many tools. Their best tool was a hand axe. They cut meat and dug with it. They also had rocks and stones. They used the stones and rocks to cut their meat.(9) When they went hunting, they used wooden spears to kill animals. They produced heat by using fire sticks rubbed together rapidly to make fire.(10)

  10. Fire • Homo Erectus people were the first ones to make fire. At first, scientists believe that Homo Erectus people could not make fires on their own. The people would bring back fire supplies, such as, branches that caught on fire in a natural way like lightening. (11) They needed the fire for light and warmth. They also used fire for hunting and catching animals that were frightened and ran away. (12) Eventually, they found out how to make their own fires, they grabbed a sick and a stone and rubbed them together creating sparks and heat, soon there will be a fire.(13)

  11. Ceremonies and Religion • Scientists think that the Homo Erectus people had no religion. Scientists believe since Homo Erectus people drew and carved babies being born and babies with their parents that Homo Erectus might have had some ceremonies. (14)

  12. Transportation • Homo Erectus people had to walk on their bare feet. Some people have heard that people from the time of Home Erectus rode dinosaurs, but they did not! (15)

  13. Development of Language • Scientists don’t know exactly how Homo Erectus people communicated or if they used hand gestures. Some scientists say Homo Erectus people spoke and some scientists even say they had better ways of communicating than we do.(16)

  14. Clothing • Homo Erectus made their own clothing by skinning animals. Homo Erectus men and woman used the skin to cover their body parts. They used strips of leather to stitch the animal skin together. (17)

  15. Art and Carvings • Scientists believe that Homo Erectus people may have had art and carvings. Scientists also believe that the people carved and made their art about ceremonies of babies being born. Scientists believe these ceremonies and pictures of babies with their parents was supposed to inspire people to have children. (18)

Homo Erectus Interesting Facts • Homo Erectus was also called “upright man.” (19) • Fossils of Homo Erectus were discovered in far away places, such as China and also the island of Java.(20) • Homo Erectus had larger brains than Homo Habilis.(21) • Homo Habilis evolved into the first people called Homo Erectus. Their bodies were much like ours, but they had ape-like faces.(22)
