What is CGMA? • CGMA exists to help you, your shipmates, and co-workers in times of need • CGMA has provided more than $170 million in assistance • CGMA strives to promote financial stability and general well-being throughout the Coast Guard community • CGMA is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to the Coast Guard family • CGMA traces its history back to 1924 – 90 YEARS this year!

  3. Who is eligible for assistance? • Active Duty Retired Military • Reserve  Auxiliary • Civilian & NAF Employees • Public Health Service Officers servingwith the Coast Guard

  4. How does CGMA help? • Interest-free loans • Personal grants • Education assistance grants & loans • Newborn baby supplies • Free, confidential financial counseling and referral services

  5. What circumstances may qualify? • Unexpected financial and personal loss • Pay, allotment, and travel claim problems • Major vehicle repair • Housing needs • Debt issues • Emergency travel • Unanticipated medical bills • Education needs

  6. CGMA 2013 Highlights • Over 5,100 loans and grants provided more than $ 3.8 million including: ∙ $477,000 in SEG Grants ∙ $176,000 in Quick Loans

  7. Adoption Program • In support of Coast Guard families adopting ∙ up to $1,000 grant for home study expenses ∙ up to $6,000 loan for adoption expenses

Command Financial Management Training • Budgeting, savings & debt • Available for any unit by contacting CGMA-HQ • Sponsored (paid for) by CGMA • Members who need one on one counseling are eligible for individual sessions, debt management programs, and housing counseling through CGMA’s agreement with the NFCC ∙

  11. Why hold an annual fundraising campaign? • Without an annual infusion of funds, CGMA would eventually be unable to provide assistance • The campaign helps raise awareness about the variety of programs and services available

  12. How is CGMA funded? • CGMA is funded through: ∙ individual contributions∙ return on investments • CGMA receives no funding from the government

  13. Why give to CGMA? • CGMA is donor sustained • Future assistance depends on your contributions • CGMA is the only relief society devoted solely to helping Coast Guard people Part of respecting our Shipmates is looking after them when they are in need…please consider giving generously to CGMA to ensure that it remains solvent to support our Shipmates.~ Admiral R.   14. How does my dollar help? • For every dollar donated in 2013, CGMA provided $1.83 in assistance and programs • Additional assistance funds come from loan repayments and return on investments Donations

  15. The bulk of assistance is provided through interest-free loans • As loans are paid back, funds are reissued to other Coast Guard Members in need of assistance • Grants may be given in cases when there is no realistic means to pay back a loan Donations Loans Grants

Donations Loans Grants Programs • Programs deliver much needed services: • Education grants for school supplies and books • Reimbursements for education loan origination fees • Newborn supplies • Respite care to those in primary caretaker positions • Professional financial-management counseling

  17. CGMA is able to operate at minimal administrative cost with only 7 employees and over 400 volunteers
