In 1968, his doctors found him fit to stand trial. He was found guilty of first degree murder but since he was legally insane he spent the rest of his life in a mental health facility.
Diagnosed "Psychiatrists found Gein had arrested development and perceived people as objects. He was diagnosed as conflicted; consciously he loved his mother and hated women; unconsciously he hated her and loved others. By destroying her, he was killing the cause of his frustration. By dissecting women who reminded him of her, he could always keep her with him. Psychiatrists diagnosed Gein as schizophrenic, clinically insane, and mentally unfit for trial.
