  1. BELLWORK • For bellwork today, you will read the “Columbian Exchange” handout. This is yours to keep, so as you read highlight/annotate, then answer the following questions: • Explain the interaction between the Taino and Columbus’ crew. • Define the Columbian Exchange. • How were Europeans able to conquer the Americas so easily? • Why were New World natives so susceptible to disease? How did diseases affect their populations? • Which old world plants/animals created problems for the New World? • Why did Europeans start using Africans as slaves instead of natives? • THINKER: In your opinion, was the Columbian Exchange more of a positive or negative development in world history? Explain!

  2. ColumbianExchange • Columbian Exchange: Exchange of animals, plants, cultures, slaves, and diseases between the New World and the Old World. • Traded crops and livestock • Diseases, especially smallpox, killed 50-90% of Native populations. • First appearance of African slaves

  3. Old World Native Plants • Citrus, apple, banana, mango, rice, wheat, coffee, and onion.

  4. New World Native Plants • Corn, tomato, potato, vanilla, rubber, cocoa, and tobacco.
