Explanation • Debate: People disagree on whether or not the government can control smoking bans • About 3,400 people die of secondhand smoke • For: Protection from cancer and other illness • Against: Nobody has the right to regulate smoking.
Causes • Secondhand smoke • People did not want to get illnesses from secondhand smoke • Ruins the restaurant experience • Smoke can ruin food and clothes • Peer pressure • People will not face peer pressure
Effect • Negative for Economy • People less likely to go to bars • Positive for Economy • Non-smokers more likely to go out • Positive for Health • Less exposure to second hand smoke
Connections • I like the smoking ban • I like that my clothes smell good and that I am not inhaling smoke • My brother does not like the smoking ban • “It is real inconvenient. I do not want to stand in the cold to enjoy my cigarette”
Solutions • Establishments that do not serve food can have smoking • Allow for non-smoking sections • Keep things the way they are
