Opening • Compose a sentence about one of your classes. The sentence must be at least 10 words long.
Opening Continued • Compose a sentence about one of your classes. The sentence must be at least 10 words long. • For this sentence, underline and label any phrase you recognize and label its type. • Prepositional (starts with a preposition) • Infinitive (start with “to” plus a verb – to sing) • Gerund (ing form of a verb used as a noun) • Participial (ing or past participial form of a verb used as an adjective) • Appositive (used to rename or describe a noun) • For examples, look at pages 4-6. • Learning Target: To review phrase types and to determine which come most naturally in your writing.

Reading • Reading Strategies: • Chart – what are the implications? • Why do some people “dislike” or “struggle with” reading? • What do people who say they are good readers do? • Practice Strategy • Learning Target – I will use a specific reading strategy to improve my ability to read efficiently and retain what I have read.
Strategy – Close Reading • Divide article in thirds • For each section • Read through it • Underline 3-4 words/phrases/sentences that seem important to you. • Circle any word/phrase you do not understand. • At end of each section • look at what you underlined and on right side – write a 1 sentence summary of that section. • On left side – make a comment about the material, connect it to your own experience, or ask a question about what was said. • Discuss
