  2. Goals • Distinguish between biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem (BD.2.ES.10). • Explain how habitats are important for organisms (BD.2.ES.10).

  3. What is ecology? • Study of organisms in their natural environment • How living organisms interact • How living and nonliving things affect each other

  4. Ecosystem • All living organisms and nonliving factors in a particular environment • Habitat • Place in an ecosystem whereorganisms live • Must meet all of the organismsneeds (i.e. enoughfood, water, andspace)

  5. Living vs. Nonliving • Biotic Factors • Living organisms in an environment • Examples: animals, plants, bacteria • Abiotic Factors • Nonliving environment • Examples: air, water, soil, light, energy
