Definition: • Sunni are followers of Muhammad’s example.
Facts: • Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam. • Followers of Sunni tradition are known as Sunnis or Sunnites. • The Sunnis call themselves this, because they believe to follow the Sunnah which means tradition. • Sunni are mostly located in the Central and northern parts of the country.
Sunni Islam Beginnings: • The roots of Sunni Islam early divided. It affected the Muslim community immediately after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. • Within Sunnism different approaches to the Islamic law and an Islamic system of belief and practice, were called the Shariah.
Beliefs: • Believes that the first four caliphs were “rightly guided”. • Believes that Muslim rulers should follow the Sunna, or Muhammad example. • Claim that the Shi’a have distorted the meaning of various passage in the Qur’an.
Connection to today: • Over the years Sunni-Shia relations have been marked by conflict. • A period of relative harmony during the twentieth century has been replaced by conflict, particularly following the American invasion of Iraq.
