  1. Why use Structures & Strategies? • To control space • To pressurise opponents • Control tempo of play • Apply principles of play

  2. Control Space Applying structures & strategies allow you to CONTROL SPACE In ATTACK you can CREATE & EXPLOIT SPACE In DEFENCE you can DENY SPACE You can MANOUEVRE and OUT-MANEOUVRE OPPONENTS by controlling SPACE

  3. CONTROL SPACE • FAST BREAK EXAMPLE: • I was able to do this during the fast break as, on collection of the rebound, we were aware of the open space ahead of our team and drove quickly towards the basket. K. ANDERSON 2011

  4. Pressurise Opponents In ATTACK you can pressurise OPPONENTS by OVERLOADING an AREA of the COURT e.g.. Creating a 3v2 situation in the right lane. In DEFENCE you can PRESSURISE OPPONENTS and DENY them the SPACE that they would want to utilise in their attack.

  5. PRESSURISE OPPONENTS • FAST BREAK EXAMPLE: • During the fast break we were able to pressurise our opponents as they only had 1 player defending their side of the court. This created a 3 v 1 situation when we began our 3 man fast break attack. K. ANDERSON 2011

  6. Control Tempo of Play Applying structures & strategies may allow you to control the tempo of play. In ATTACK you may use a fast break where you want to use space to outmanoeuvre your opponents In DEFENCE you may apply a ZONE DEFENCE where you will be trying to DELAY opponents attack

  7. Control Tempo of Play FAST BREAK EXAMPLE: The fast break allows our team to control the pace of the game and catch our opponents off-guard with a high speed strategy. A quick rebound and outlet pass and the team awareness can dictate the movements of our opponents and overcoming their defence. K.ANDERSON 2011
