A Report on GP Implementation in Edible Oil Industry in India Presented by: M/s.Rama Phosphates Ltd., (Oil Divn) 20/6, K.M. Stone, Indore-Ujjain Road Indore (M.P.), INDIA. Ph: 91-7321-226402 (Telefax), 226327. E-mail: ramaind@sancharnet.in 2nd World Conference on GP
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We are thankful toAsian Productivity Organisation (APO)for organising the“2nd World Conference on Green Productivity”& for inviting us to participate in it. Our sincere thanks toAPO, for selecting our company Rama Phosphates Ltd (Oil Division), Indore (India) for conducting the“Green Productivity Demonstration Project”& for their able guidance in this direction to accomplish theGreen Productivity projectsuccessfully, in achieving remarkable results in improvement of productivity, quality and cost reduction. 2nd World Conference on GP
Introduction • The Green Productivity: The object of GP is to minimise the waste & to convert waste into asset, hence improving environmental performance. • The Industry - Rama Group:Rama Phosphates Ltd. (Oil Divn.) is a Flagship Company of Rama Group with Global Turnover of US $ 400 millions, situated at Indore in state of Madhya Pradesh (India). It is a Edible Oil Company having 500 TPD Solvent Extraction Plant and 100 TPD Refinery. • BACKGROUND: TheGreen Productivity Demonstration Program (GPDP),sponsored byAsian Productivity Organization (APO), Japanhas been successfully carried out by the National Productivity Council (NPC) India at M/s. Rama Phosphate Limited (RPL), Oil Division, Indore, M.P. India, during the period Nov 2000 to Jan 2002. 2nd World Conference on GP
The GPDP project had the objectives to demonstrate thatGP practice leads to in achieving enhancement in productivity while minimizing environmental impacts. While executing the project, the standard six steps GP methodology designed by APO was followed. For the purpose of integrating GP with ISO 14001 in order to achieve ISO 14001 certification, a supporting ISO 14001 methodology, designed by NPC (India) was followed. We had already awarded ISO 14001 Certificate by M/s.SGS, Yarsley International Certification Services UK. Green Productivity Demonstration Project (GPDP)sponsored by APO had successfully implemented at RPL (Oil Divn). We are getting good overall productivity of the unit after implementing the GPDP project as well as less pollution i.e. improvement in environmental performance. We had invested US $ 0.5 million on above GPDP Project & it is estimated that above investment of US $.0.5 millionwould be paid back within 12-15 months time. 2nd World Conference on GP

EVOLVINGGREEN PRODUCTIVITY OPTIONS In view of cause-effect analysis, Green Productivity options were generated with an objective to minimize or eliminate the causes and associated impacts/effects of waste streams/problem areas. Total 36 GP options were generated. The GP options evolved are classified into 5 groups based on the techniques viz: 2nd World Conference on GP
Distribution of GP options under various Techniques Technique wise distribution of GP options in Graphical Form is illustrated in Fig ED - 2 as under: 2nd World Conference on GP
IMPLEMENTATION OFGREEN PRODUCTIVITY OPTIONS Viability of above 36 GP options evolved, determinedbyTechnical & Environmental feasibility& it was found thatout of 36 GP options, only 28 GP options were found to be viable. The feasible GP options wereclassified into following 3 categories, depending upon the requirement of time for implementation, their importance & pay backperiodas under: 2nd World Conference on GP
Distribution of GP options as short , medium & long term The distribution of GP options under short term, medium term and long term is illustrated at Figure ED - 3. 2nd World Conference on GP
Achievement of the“GREEN PRODUCTIVITY DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM” The specific time bound targets were set corresponding to each feasible GP options. Also, a detail action plan was drawn for each target.Till Jan’2002, out of 28 feasible GP options, 18 GP options have been implemented. The other GP options are under different stages of implementation. It is estimated that thetotal cost on implementing 18 GP options is about US $ 0.5 million. This cost includes expenditure towards Environmental Management System documentation, logistics, and housekeeping and ISO 14001 certification. 2nd World Conference on GP
Out of above US $ 0.5 million, major investment of US $ 0.247 million for new Fluidised Bed Combustion (FBC) Boiler of Capacity 14.5 TPH at 15 Kg/Cm2 Steam pressure, to meet the deficiency of steam, which was also a GP Option. Till now we had recovered benefit worth US $ 165,000 on account of FBC Boiler. It is estimated that above investment of US $.0.5 million would be paid back within 12-15 months time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 2nd World Conference on GP
