  3. Economic Impact of Recycling in SC • $6.5 billion industry in 2006 (economic impact) • $4 billion in investments since 2006 • Economic cluster through New Carolina • RMDAC supported development of recycling cluster RecyclonomicsSC

  4. 2012 Economic Development Impact 2012 Totals 770 Jobs $463,000,000 investment 19 companies

  5. Current State of Affairs People don’t recycle enough Businesses need recycled feedstock 29.5% MSW Recycling Rate 4 times more jobs per capita

  6. Economic Development Impact • Since 2006, over $4 billion in investment by the recycling industry in SC with over 6,000 jobs • 2013 - 500 recycling businesses with 21,000 jobs

  7. Recycling Industry Demand: PAPER • 2800 tons per day of paper is consumed between 4 paper mills in SC. • Of the 2800 tons consumed by SC paper mills, 90% is generated in NC and SC. • 10 years ago these mills were pulling material in from NYC and Miami, FL. • ANNUAL DEMAND: 952,000 tons Paper Mills

  9. Recycling Industry Demand: STEEL • 16,000 tons per day of steel is consumed between 4 SC steel mills. • Nucor (2) – Darlington and Berkeley Counties • CMC – Lexington County • ArcelorMittal – Georgetown County • ANNUAL DEMAND: 5,440,000 tons Steel Mills

  11. Recycling Industry Demand: ALUMINUM • Mt. Holly plant consumes 300-350 tons of aluminum per day • ANNUAL DEMAND: 120,000 tons Flat Rolled Aluminum Mill Container Foil

  12. Recycling Industry Demand: PLASTICS PET Plastics Reclaimers & Reprocessors • Carolinas demand for • # 1 PET and #2 HDPE • 1100 tons per day • capacity for PET/HDPE • ANNUAL DEMAND: 375,000 tons HDPE Plastics Reclaimers PET Plastics Reclaimers

  14. Recycling Industry Demand: GLASS • 575 tons a day from the Carolinas • 17,000 tons a month glass – post consumer and post industrial • ANNUAL DEMAND: 210,000 tons Glass Processors

  15. Lost Opportunity • 348,000 tons of recyclable MSW materials were buried • $12.5 million in wasted disposal fees by municipalities • $47 Million in lost revenue for local government • Total net loss over 3 years is  $216,500,000 – just shy of a quarter billion dollars
