Summary of Kopčo et al. (2012) Neuronal representation of distance in human auditory cortex based on intensity independent cues ILD & DRR= optimal cues to study intensity-independent distance processing Two questions: Are we really looking at distance area, or is it area encoding one of the acoustic cues ILD and DRR? Which cues did the subjects actually use? DRR or ILD?
Acoustic analysis of the stimuli Two questions: Are we really looking at distance area, or is it area encoding one of the acoustic cues ILD and DRR? Which cues did the subjects actually use? DRR or ILD? DRR should dominate (Kopco et al 2011) and these data
Current study: 3 behavioral experiments Exp 1: • Is DRR a stronger cue than ILD? • Does incongruent DRR-ILD stimulation cause a weaker distance percept than congruent presentation? I.e., is this a good stimulus for fMRI?

Summary • Distance cue weighting critically dependent on previous experience (Exp 1&3): • ILD weighted more if many conditions with consistent ILD included • DRR weighted more if conditions with DRR-only cue more frequent • DRR-based performance persists to performance on following days in the same virtual room • Perceived direction is not critical for DRR-based distance judgments (Exp 2): • Performance with diotic stimuli (perceived within the median plane) is better than performance for monaural stimulus (perceived in direction consistent with stimulus) • Incongruent stimulation weakens distance percept • We have good stimuli for fMRI
