  5. Lessons Learned • FANS is a major cultural shift for all people involved. • Extended training is essential. • Human Factors issues must receive much more attention. • Implementation coordination is necessary.

Lessons Learned continued • A single standard is needed for Communications & Navigation displays & inputs across cockpits & controller work stations. • Now there are more than 16 standards for describing Lat./Long. • We have various permutations for flight identification (call sign). Different protocols are now required for various cockpit applications.

  7. Example: location ambiguity Actual CPDLC message: “CROSS 0100S AT AND MAINTAIN FL350 REPORT REACHING FL350” Later received: “VERIFY YOULL BE CROSSING 01 SOUTH AT 350 FOR TRAFFIC”

  9. Lessons Learned continued • Schedules must be realistic and better managed. • Be prepared to manage failures. • The industry business bias must change from favoring the old to encouraging the new. • Remember the customer -- The traveling/shipping public.

  12. Looking Forward continued In the excitement of implementation DO NOT LOOSE SIGHT OF THE OBJECTIVES as occasionally happened with FANS-1.

  13. Looking Forward continued • During the transition phase “Classic”, FANS-1/A and 2nd Generation CNS/ATM (ATN) aircraft must be accommodated. Don’t forget the SEAMLESS objective. Create a system which will easily accommodate changes.

  14. Looking Forward continued • United is equipping for ATN • New delivery aircraft (Airbus & Boeing) now being delivered with digital capable radios. • All B-777s and latest A-319/320s provisioned for ATN • Participating in PETAL-II • Plan to participate in FAA’s CPDLC Build 1-A

  15. Looking Forward continued • More compelling business cases are needed to justify costly retrofit phases: • VDL-2 AoA • VDL-2 ATN • CPDLC via VDL-2 ATN • Other initiatives must be considered • e.g. Voice & Data via VDL-3

  16. Looking Forward continued • United policy is to attain the benefits of FANS-1/A now. • We are engaged in the development of the next generation CNS/ATM systems. • We look forward to serving our customers with “Free Flight” at the earliest opportunity.
