    3. Outreach Geography Initially worked in six inner London boroughs: Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Westminster, City of London In process of expanding work into a further four: Greenwich, Hackney, Kensington & Chelsea, Newham

    5. EMDP - Eligibility Students must live in one of the target boroughs and attend a state school or FE college OR Students must study in a state school or FE college in a target borough

    6. EMDP - Requirements Must have GCSEs in Science, Maths and English Must have 3 A2s (or equivalent) Including: Chemistry (to at least AS level) + one other science subject (pref. Biology) Standard offer = 3 C grades

    7. EMDP - Admissions Process UCAS form + additional reference PQA test Extended interview Numbers to date

    8. EMDP – Interview (i) Short questionnaire Ethical case study Semi-structured interview covering: Career investigation/work experience Ethical approach Application of scientific knowledge

    9. EMDP - Interview (ii) Good indicators of success: Ability to summarise the case study Absence of rigid ideas Ability to “think on their feet” Responsibility for their studies and work experience

    10. EMDP - Confirmation A level grades achieved are considered in context of school/college performance vs. national averages Make changed course offers to some local A100 applicants who miss their grades Accept a few students via clearing

    13. EMDP - Induction Phase Originally four weeks - then: two weeks – now: one week, intensive Originally academic – now: generic skills attitudes dissection chemistry & numeracy testing

    14. EMDP - Pre-clinical phase Integrated with conventional course Takes three years (55%, 65%, 80%) Relevant questions from “conventional” exams Same pass mark (calculated) From 2004-5, formative first year Additional support given

    16. EMDP - Academic Support Chemistry Numeracy Literacy Course-related topics - 20% in 1st year - 15% in 2nd - 10% in 3rd

    18. EMDP - Pastoral Support Standard personal tutor and adviser but more frequent contact Weekly “surgery”

    19. EMDP - Student Progression First cohort (started in 2001): 100% success in first year 66% success in second year (2 repeating) Second cohort: 80% success in first year (2 repeating) Best EMDP students are amongst the top 10% of the conventional year group

EMDP - Reflections Students can succeed without AAB A successful project requires additional staff and resources GCSE grades in English are useful predictors Additional references are often extremely helpful The PQA is not testing scientific reasoning Important to focus on success, not failure
