What are SATs? • SATs stands for Standard Assessment Tests • They can also be referred to as ‘end of key stage’ tests • The papers are externally marked and the results are usually available just before the end of the summer term • The results are given in the form of a level – Level 4 is the expected level at Year 6
How are the SATs organised? • Maths • A written test with a calculator (45 minutes) • A written test without a calculator (45 minutes) • Mental arithmetic • The tests will assess number skills (children must know their multiplication tables, they will not be allowed prompts), measuring, calculating and problem solving, shape awareness and data handling skills • Showing their working out and explaining their understanding of a question may earn extra marks
How are the SATs organised? • English • Reading Test – a comprehension test with 15 minutes to read a booklet containing various styles of text (fiction, non-fiction and poetry) before answering questions (45 minutes) relating to the text (requiring some short and some long answers) • A short writing task (20 minutes) • A long writing task (45 minutes) – both will involve planning and will be marked on sentence structure and punctuation; text structure and organisation; composition and effect and handwriting. • Spelling test – the children will be given a piece of text with 20 words missed out. The text will be read out and the children will write in the missing words.
What can I do to help? • Continue listening to your child read, asking questions about what they have read. • Keep practicing times tables and spellings regularly with your child • Help your child with any revision homework • Ensure they get plenty of sleep and are not anxious. • Make a note of the SATs week – week commencing 9th May 2011
Revision Guides and Timetables • Please make sure that you have picked up copies of the study books for your child’s use at home. • They may also be asked to bring the books into school to enable them to do revision in school too. • I have written a guide revision timetable though you may prefer to write your own.
Revise-wise One website I highly recommend and use on occasion within class is Revise-wise found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/index.shtml This is easily accessible and well organised into sections for each subject. Another good school website is: http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/revision If you know of any other good sites, please let me know and I will forward these on to the children.
