  4. Current Events • Many Persian Gulf states to close Syrian bases - call for an end to fighting • Border fight at Egypt - suspects tried to cross border in Israel - allegedly Bedouin tobacco smugglers

  6. Arabian Peninsula • Intersection of 3 Continents - become a cultural crossroads - trade, culture, and religion • Countries - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Yemen Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia • Development of trade centers - ocean access - oases - Silk Road

  7. Bedouins • A Nomadic people - move from place to place - followed oases • Strong culture - family - religion • Adapted to harsh conditions - desert • herders

  8. Birth of Islam • One of the major monotheistic religions - Major Prophet Muhammad - lived in Mecca (S.A.) • Religion United people - common culture - religious duties • Bedouins spread religion - conquered people - replaced with Muslim leaders

  9. Religious Teachings • 5 Pillars of Islam - Faith, Prayer, Fasting, Charity, and Pilgrimage • Pillars are basic duties - unite people - similar culture • Religion united under language - spread throughout the world

  12. Holy Competition • 3 major Monotheistic religions - Judaism, Christianity, Islam - share holy city of Jerusalem • Area creates competition - each religious group wants to claim the city and sites • Controlled by Israel - Jewish State

  13. Jewish Holy Sites • Jerusalem - biblical location of Jewish homeland - site of original temples • Western Wall (Wailing Wall) - only remaining wall of 2nd temple - destroyed by Romans in 70 A.D. • Prayer site for many Jewish followers

  14. Christian Holy Site • Jerusalem - city is holy based on Crucifixion of Jesus • Many biblical towns - located near the city - Galilee, Bethlehem • Crusades - regain city from Muslim control

  15. Muslim Holy Site • Jerusalem 3rd most important city in the region - Mecca and Medina top 2 • City where Muhammad rose into heaven - Dome of the Rock Mosque - large pilgrimage to city • Site located near other holy sites - source of conflict between religions
