What makes a civilization? (5 Steps) • Grow crops and domesticate animals • Domesticate- to tame • Not having to follow food means people can stay in one place. • Build permanent houses
3. Develop technology • Technology- the use of tools to help people in their work. • Examples: the wheel, the plow 4. Intellectual achievements • Intellectual- having to do with the mind • Examples: Invention of writing and the calendar
5. Create laws and rules to help people live together and keep order.
Chapter 10, Section 1 • Egypt in North Africa and Mesopotamia in southwest Asia were the earliest known civilizations. • Civilizations- highly developed cultures
2. Mesopotamia means “between the rivers” • It is located between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River. • This area is known as the Fertile Crescent. • Early advancements in Mesopotamia were farming, writing and government. • They are credited having the first written story, The Epic of Gilgamesh
3. Egyptians depended on the Nile River. • Ancient Egypt was ruled by pharaohs or kings. • Pyramids were built as tombs to bury the pharaoh. • The Egyptian’s system of writing was called hieroglyphics. • Cartouche- an Egyptian nameplate that was worn or placed on a coffin after death.
Section 2: Three World Religions Three world religions are Judaism, Christianity and Islam • All of these religions are monotheistic • Monotheistic- believe in one supreme god. • Prophet- a person that is chosen to speak for a god, a representative of a God.
Judaism- the oldest monotheistic religion. • Followers are known as Jews. • The Belief: Moses is the prophet sent from God, Jesus is not the promised savior.
2. Christianity- The Belief: Jesus is the messiah and the son of God. • Messiah- Savior
3. Islam- Followers are called Muslim • The Belief: Allah is the one God, and Muhammad is the messenger. 4. To all three religions, Jerusalem is a holy city.
