E N D
Prayer and Preaching • 35 In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there. 36 Simon and his companions searched for Him; 37 they found Him, and said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” 38 He said to them, “Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for.” (Mark 1:35-38)
Prayer and Preaching • And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons. (Mark 1:39)
The Leper • And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” (Mark 1:40)
The Leper • 45 “As for the leper who has the infection, his clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall be uncovered, and he shall cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ 46 He shall remain unclean all the days during which he has the infection; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.” (Leviticus 13:45-46)
The Leper • 40 And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” (Mark 1:40-41)
Christ’s Compassion • The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love. (Psalm 103:8) • Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yes, our God is compassionate. (Psalm 116:5)
The Healing Touch • 40 And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. (Mark 1:40-42)
The Warning • 43 And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, 44 and He said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” (Mark 1:43-44)
The Warning • But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere. (Mark 1:45)
4. Lessons from the Leper APPROACH JESUS: • Reverently • Boldly 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near to the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)
4. Lessons from the Leper APPROACH JESUS: • Reverently • Boldly • Humbly • Submissively
Pray for 2013 • Spiritual growth, becoming more like Christ throughout 2013 • A renewed passion to read the Word and proclaim the Word to those in need • A renewed commitment to prayer, communing with the Father like Jesus in Mark 1 • Consistency in other spiritual disciplines such as praise, solitude, giving, fellowship, service, and meditating on God’s Word • Pray for that we continue to know and follow Jesus with greater depth and conviction as we continue through the gospel according to Mark
