November Topic: Interactive Safety Training Intro: Top Five Ways to Make Safety Training Interesting Computer Based Safety Training Tony Ferralli, Mastery Group
1. Safety Jeopardy • Make a game out of the training session. • Rather than lecture, ask only questions, then correct incorrect answers and expand on answers to get your point across. • Divide naturally competitive teams. • The game rules are not important, but the interaction is important.
2. “Ask a Question” Training • Form each bit of information in the form of a question. • Ask a question, let the class answer. • Great way to promote interaction. • Most effective for refresher training. • Students will answer the questions for you. • You will learn the misconceptions of the group.
3. Rewards/Giveaways • To get the class to participate, try rewards: • Candy bars, chips, etc. • Straight cash! Dollar bills. • Give tickets for each response, then raffle off a prize at the end of the class. • Use prizes at strategic times. • Award the first person who asks a question.
4. Test First, Lecture Second • Ask if there are any questions. If not, hand out the test. • This will create questions and generate discussion among the students. • Use difficult or unique questions to promote discussion.
5. Interactive Safety Training • a.k.a Computer based training. • Can be done during unexpected, machine down time. • Modify training to meet your own program. • Nice break from classroom training.
