The Reign of Diocletian • Told farmers and merchants how much they could charge for goods (Edict on Prices) • Increased size of army and government • Divided empire to keep it running smoothly • Each side had own government
The Reign of Diocletian • Divided empire was expensive - Diocletian created new tax system to pay for it • He shared power with another emperor
Emperor Constantine • Came to power in A.D. 312 • Under him, Christianity became main religion
The Reign of Constantine • Built new capital at Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople • It is located between Greece and Asia, reachable by land and sea, good defense • Dedicated in A.D. 330; became “New Rome”
After Constantine • Nephew, Julian, becomes emperor in A.D. 361 • Christianity becomes official religion by A.D. 400 • By A.D. 400, empire permanently split
