Music Videos • Music videos usually consist of a song with either performance clips or conceptual clips (or a mix of the two) produced for artistic purposes or promotion for the band/artists who’s song is featured • One of the first videos for promotion released was Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles which was first broadcasted on MTV at 12:01 AM on the 1st of August in 1981 (it was the first music video that MTV had ever broadcasted) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r-tXRLazs • MTV then became the major platform for all bands who’s videos were used for promotion featuring bands and artists such as The Who, Rod Stewart and The Pretenders • Recently most music videos consist of various different shot of the band in action or actors acting out certain scenes within the theme of the song.
CD/DVD Covers and Magazine Advertisements • In 1910 records would usually not have album covers they would usually just be in a plain cardboard sleeve to protect the actual record and not entice customers into buying the album and it wasn’t until the late 1930’s that artists started replacing the plain covers used on records before with album artwork and pictures etc. some albums using original images whilst others would use classic artwork • Album covers give a feel to the person buying the album if they have not heard of the band/artist before about what the actual album will sound like and they type of artwork on the front, be it a simple image or a more intricate drawing etc reflects the band and artists musical style • Here are some examples of album covers from various genres below: It’s commonly known that when a knew album by a well known band is being released there is usually advertisements within magazine to say the release date with similar artwork to the one on the album, this has been going on within magazines for a very long time as it is a good way to publicise the band and album, especially when people are reading magazines aimed at them if they have an interest in a similar type of music etc. For example various CD releases of the genres NME readers would listen to have advertisements featured within them.
Indie Music • Indie rock music derives from alternative rock music and is a very broad genre as lots of bands lately have adopted an indie rock vibe within the music that they produce. Indie rock music is also very global and has many sub cultures such as indie pop, lo-fi and grunge etc. • It derived in the 80s with lots of bands at the time such as The Stone Roses, The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Smiths falling under a similar music genre • There are now many modern day bands that would fall into the indie rock/alternative genre, all adopting a unique sound and due to this the music videos since the time of the 80s when Indie music made its first appearances they usually reflect the music being played and due to a lot of the special effects available for music videos now a lot of them are more diverse in terms of the technology used although a lot of music in the Indie genre would normally take a more simplistic approach to music videos An example of a simple indie music video by James Blake: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOKXHzL6UVs The Jesus and Mary Chain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPPP3BXurHk
