Music Video History Music has been around for many centuries and has developed from just instruments to the use of vocal lyrics. 1894 is one of the earliest examples of what lead to music videos nowadays, when ‘Little Lost Child’ was projected on screen to a live performance with simultaneous images accompanying the music. In the 1930’s music videos were more popular but took the form in short films. This was also the start of screen songs where a cartoon video was made and encouraged viewers to sing along by following a bouncy ball. After this, music videos became more & more popular by music artists and MTV launched their 24hr music station, which lead to the main role of music marketing in 1981. Soon to follow MTV was VH1 and this allowed artists to widen their popularity. From when music videos first started to catch on , up until the late 70’s, music videos consisted of the singer or band playing in front of a live audience. Then in the late 70’s to early 80’s, they started to develop to make it more interesting for the audience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZbKHDPPrrc In this music video of Doris Day’s ‘Que Sera Sera’ it does show a slight storyline of her singing to a young boy. This shows that there was the idea of having a narrative to music videos in the 50’s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsNmn14nzB0 This is an example of a collection of music videos in the 1950’s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNVvqZHUNWI In 1964 The Beatles created a modern music video using motion capture, for their song ‘A Hard Days Night’. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914 The 1985 A-Ha song ‘Take On Me’ has a storyline to the music video. The producers of the video used rotoscoping where a live action footage is traced over every frame to give it that effect. This technology was effective towards the audience and made the music video and the song very popular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r-tXRLazs The 1979 hit ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles, the video consists of the band playing while a sort of narrative takes place around them. It’s not exactly a storyline but it is something other than the band just playing in front of a camera. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JcmQONgXJM Will Smiths 90’s hit ‘’Gettin’ Jiggy With It’ shows the, what’s now known as, the cliché 90’s R’n’B music video moves. Such as dancing girls and rapping into the fish eye camera lens. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ht5RZpzPqw Blink 182’s first release of the millennium in 2000 ‘All the Small Things’ shows a comical impersonations of cliché moves in videos in the 90’s. More recently, social networking sites such as Youtube & the likes of spotify have been created in which artists music can be uploaded and viewed by anyone in the world. This creates a wider audience for the artists therefore creating more popularity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb5aq5HcS1A This Red Hot Chilli Peppers 2006 song ‘DaniCalafornia’ is an example of the evolution of music throughout the decades. It shows famous well known impersonations of music videos and artists of different genres.
History Of Rock Chuck berry invented Rock & Roll in 1955. The movement came after many young people started listening to the likes of blues/jazz & country. Back then racial barriers were extremely prejudice and blue/jazz was known for their black musicians and audiences. As Rock & Roll slowly grew, barriers were broken and young people had rebellious attitudes and weren't afraid to not conform to societies views at that point in time. Chuck Berry is an example of how rock music created synergy between audience & performer, however, people found newer idols such as Elvis Presley. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsp4VCbVvn4 ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ by Chuck Berry was one of his influential songs on Rock & Roll and his young audience. In later years, Rock music had reached the likes of California and this is where The Beach Boys created ‘surf music’ – This was just rock music but with a twist which included vocal harmonies. In the early sixties bands such as The Rolling Stones, Yardbirds & Animals formed and carried on the rock tradition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6d8eKvegLI The Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It Black’ was a popular and well known song, even today. The most influential bands of the second generation were the Who & the Kinks and brought rock to Britain. After the sixties all over rock artists were grouping and brought us the likes of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix & Velvet Underground which all are still popular today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvyDWGF290M The Kinks’ ‘You Really Got Me’ In the 1970’s developed glam and punk rock as well as the start of what’s now known as classic rock. Artists such as Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper and Kiss, who are still well known today, became popular with their new style of rock. When the 90’s began, genres such as grunge, alternative and hip hop began. When new bands started to form, the genres came with them. Genres under the rock category include: Grunge with artists such as Nirvana and Radiohead, Metal artists Slipknot and Rage Against The Machine, Hard Rock with OzzyOsbourne and Foo Fighters. In the 80’s CD’s replaced records and tapes and MTV launched. Influential artists such as ACDC, Michael Jackson and Guns & Roses began their influence on the generation. New genres such as heavy metal, synthpop and rap began to make an appearance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ By Nirvana was a very popular song and put their album ‘Nevermind’ on the top of the charts in 1992. Although the lead singer of Nirvana took his own life in 1994, the band’s albums are still incredibly popular and influential to today’s youth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjsUzI_BtGk Slipknot’s ‘Psychosocial’ released in 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNaT0t67E14 ‘Warning’ by Skindred, a reggae-rock-rap-metal band. Today rock music has developed and adapted to new generations and form meanings around society’s issues today. Nowadays, there are even more genres and subgenres because different types of music have combined, such as pop-rock and reggae-rock, and split off into sub sections of the same genre such as heavy metal rock, metal rock and hardcore rock with screamo. Music hasn’t changed much since the 2000’s but new music is coming out all the time so an evolution of new music will happen eventually.
Rock & Music Video Combined The first rock music videos known were from artists such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and others from the 50’s. Music videos in thoughs day were usually the singer or band playing in front of a live audience with just a camera and a sound mic. Towards the end of the 70’s, music videos had more of a narrative and storyline to go with the songs meaning and lyrics. This meant using recording studios and miming the lyrics while shooting the video. They also started to use cartoons and special effects in music videos to make it more interesting. Using a narrative for the song also sold the artists better because the audience can relate to the song more in a visual sense. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMmljYkdr-w&feature=related Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’ was one of his first songs and first music videos which became popular to the young generation of the 50’s The teenage rebellion in the 50’s and 60’s was apparently caused by the music the teenagers were listening to and the way that Elvis Presley moved his hips and how other various artists portrayed themselves. So the parents of the teenagers took this as symbolism and the cause of the rebellion. As the music industry progressed and the audiences changed, music videos became more and more about the message to the audience and what the connotation is in the song. However, even though the music genre and artists and generation has changed, the idea that music influences young minds to do certain things is still in the minds of parents. Such as parents or society blaming rock music or heavier music on depression and suicide. Stereotypes are made that people who listen to artists such as Slipknot, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows and others like them are depressed or dark. So the idea of music’s influences have not changed over the development of music. Rock music videos from the 50’s to about the early 70’s was the band playing in front of a small audience. From around the 70’s they started to do their music videos with a full concert of people. They did this for a decade or so and then the rock music videos started to have storylines. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAt7YbX0T9k KISS ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’ music video in 1975 where the video is set at a KISS concert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yvGCAvOAfM This is ‘The Kill (Bury Me)’ by 30 Seconds to Mars in 2010 where it shows a storyline in the music video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04F4xlWSFh0 Drowning Pool’s ‘Bodies’
History of Album Covers Album cover art was first introduced in the late 1930’s. It was a way, and still is a way, of advertising the album, making it stand out and making it become recognisable for the audience. The album covers first started off as just the title of the record and the artists name. It then evolved to having the artists image on the album or even their signature to make it more special for the audience. The colour scheme reflects the emotions of the album and thus, telling the audience the content of the album without even listening to it. This is another way of advertising the album depending on the audience’s preferences. Album covers have remained with this colour scheme idea but developed the fonts and styles to adapt to the evolving music genres The Glass Child album is simple with just a greyscale colour scheme to represent her songs and lyrics. For example, this ACDC cover has a dark colour scheme and complicated pattern to reflect the rock metal music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkPwRkabdYM This is The Glass Child’s ‘Insanity’. The album cover reflects the songs mood and meaning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1iR2Wi3u5o This is ACDC’s ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top’. The genre of music suits the album cover.
History of Magazine Advertisement Magazine advertisement has been going on since public publishing started. The first closest record of magazine advertisement was in the late 1600’s. Since then, it has been the same concept, just different products. Magazine advertising has always had one purpose, to persuade the target audience that they need what is being advertised. It first started out at advertising products but when the war struck, they used magazines to convince people to recruit into the army to serve their country. Magazines have a variety of genres and sub-genres which advertise everything and anything that is sellable to the appropriate audience.
Influence This research overall has influenced me to create a video that has a meaning to the song. I will try to find actors to portray my songs meaning the best way I can. For example, I am doing a rock song, and there should be a meaning or message with that song so I will need to do a storyline that relates to it. I would like to put subliminal messages within my video to make it more interesting. The research has showed me that videos with storylines are more common now and since the band I am thinking of using is in another country, I will have to do a video with just the actors I choose. I do like the ‘Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ idea of doing different genres throughout the years. I would also like to make it funny, if I can, however, that can be hard to make people find it funny so I’m going to try my best. I have learnt from my research that the album cover must relate to the songs, and genre of the music. The colour scheme of the album cover will have to create the mood for the whole album so it will have to speak for all the songs on the album. Since I am only doing one song, I will only have to worry about the colour scheme and look of the cover for one mood of song. The magazine advertisement will have to match the album cover to also suit the mood of the album and sell the album to the audience in an eye-catching way. This means it will have to stand out from any other advert that could be in the same magazine to gain attention from the audience.
