Americans Want Independence • Britain had a huge debt from the French and Indian war • Britain taxed the colonist to help pay for war • Colonist felt taxes were unfair • “No taxation without representation”
War with Britain • Britain passed a tax on tea • To protest, colonist threw tea overboard at a Boston Harbor • Known as the “Boston Tea Party” • Britain punished the Massachusetts colony with no imports
1st Continental Congress Representatives met, but were unsuccessful in changing things Second Continental Congress Voted to raise an army First battle was in Lexington, Massachusetts The army was commanded by George Washington First and Second Continental Congress
