How do I find the lengths of segmentsformed by two lines that intersect? Question: For a given point and circle, the product of the lengths of the two segments from the point to the circle is the same along any line through the point and circle.
Ex.3: Secant & tangentAlways start at the point of intersection! • The tangent segment counts twice!

Circles in the Coordinate PlaneCh. 11.5 Today’s Goal(s): To write an equation of a circle. To find the center and radius of a circle.
Writing an Equation of a CircleAn equation of a circle with center (h, k) and radius r is: • Standard form:
How do I write the equation of a circle?Ex.1: • center (5, -2); radius 7
You Try…Ex.1 • center (3, 5); radius 6 • center (-2, -1); radius

How do I write the equation of a circle when I am given the center and a point on the circle? • We need to find the radius!! • Use the distance formula to find the distance “radius” between the 2 points!
Use distance formula to find the radius. Substitute center and radius in standard form. Ex.2:Write the standard equation of the circle with center (1, -3) that passes through the point (2, 2). Or… Pythagorean Theorem!!
If you know the standard equation of a circle, then you can graph it using the center and radius.Ex.3: Graph each circle. a.) Center = _____ Radius = _____
a.) b.) Ex.4: Use the graph to write the equation of the circle.
