    1. Pragmatism Presented by V. Martinez and Frances Copeland

    2. Beliefs Ideas are tools that can be used to cope with the world. Use what works The means is as important as the end result. Science has caused many problems, but it can be used to make a better world. Ability grouping

    3. Philosophers John Locke – was a realist who influenced pragmatism. George Mead – Children need to be social to learn. William James – He made pragmatism popular. Religion had value if there were suitable consequences. The proof is in the pudding. The pudding must be tasted to know if it is good.

    4. Philosophers John Dewey We begin to think because there is a problem. Social relationships are important to the learning process. Learners will be most motivated to study knowledge when it is related to the present. Charles Sanders Pierce He believed in testing ideas with experiences.

    5. Aims of Education The goal of education is growth in the ability to learn from experience and to make good decisions based on that experience because humankind is ultimately responsible for bringing order to the universe. -Provide the fullest life possible for all

    6. Methods of Education 1. Solve real life problems in a practical setting. 2. Experimentation leads to problems which children must solve.

    7. Curriculum 1. Diversified and problem centered 2. All learning starts with a question or problem that allows students to search for answers. 3. Use a variety of resources from traditional to modern.

    8. Role of the Teacher Provide open ended opportunities for study in an environment that allows children to think and act intelligently to test ideas or skills to solve problems.
