Junior/Senior Clinic ECE-1Development of FPGA-based fNIR (functional Near InfraRed) Spectroscopy for Brain Imaging Applications L. Head ECE – Rowan University with Drexel University Optical Imaging Research Group Fall 2007
ECE-1 • PROJECT GOAL: • To develop a “wearable” imaging system that will be used in medical diagnosis & monitoring, learning assessment and other applications where blood flow changes are used to assess function. • The system incorporates • stimulus, • data acquisition, • signal processing, and • data transmission to replace the desktop instrumentation currently in use.
ECE-1 Making the transition from: A desk-top, PC-based system To a single headband system with on-board stimulus, detection, processing, and transmission X BATTERY LED DETECTOR TX FPGA ADC
ECE-1 Sensor development – modular parts from molded rubber Tasks: Develop Solidworks models for new applications Create molds for modular sensors Investigate material properties for optimal sensor flexibility and interface with targeted areas of body (forehead – arm) Develop attachment hardware that provides subject comfort and unrestricted motion
Junior/Senior Clinic ECE-27-Segment Display Character Recognition L. Head - ECE – Rowan University with Omega Engineering Bridgeport, NJ Fall 2007
ECE-2 7 Segment Display Character Recognition • GOALS • Eliminate need for human data recording from 7-segment display during immunity testing • Develop recognition software that is adaptable for varying display configurations • Generalize system for variety of number recognition applications
ECE-2 Recognition System Hand Recording of Data Device Under Test Camera Frame Capture & Recognition Software
ECE-2 Status and Next Tasks • Status: • MATLAB implementation of recognition software complete • Frame grabber system implemented • Next Tasks: • Resolution of timing issues • Real time graphical output development • Implementation in Visual Basic • Project needs: • 2 or 3 ECE students
