Take Obtain Ask Complete A Four Step Process
Be sure to have test scores sent to colleges TAKE ...the SAT or ACT • Check the college website to see which test(s) are required
OBTAIN …Application components • Visit the College’s website EARLY in your Senior year to familiarize yourself with the application procedures • To find information • Use Counseling Center catalogs • Use Internet resources such as the WOIS website (www.wois.org)
COMPLETE …the Application • Complete the application ACCURATELY • Print a copy for your records • save copies of essays • create a spreadsheet to track progress

ASK ...for High School Info • Official Transcripts • Student Data (Class Rank / GPA) For the Common Application you’ll need: • School Reports • Mid-year Reports • Counselor and Teacher Recommendations
ASK …for Letters of Recommendation • Have a completed information sheet filled out • Submit request (for counselor) with application form FOUR WEEKS before date needed
Processing the Application What gets mailed and what is sent electronically? Do I mail it myself, or send it through the Counseling Center?
Two Types of Applications • Type A:those only requiring an official high school transcript • Type B:those requiring an official high school transcript, school report, and/or counselor recommendation
Type A: CWU, Evergreen College, EWU, WSU, WWU • Complete the online application • Have SAT/ACT scores sent directly to the college • Request an official transcript from your Counseling Tech. in the Counseling Office. Allow 24-48 hours for processing.
Type A: University of Washington • Complete online application including the Core Subjects page • Have SAT/ACT scores sent directly to UW. • Do not request official transcript.Request an unofficial transcript to complete the Core Subjects Coursework section.
Type B:Private Schools / Common Application • Complete online application. www.commonapp.org • Student mails out supplemental items. • “Invite” counselor and teachers to submit forms online and upload letter/transcript. Allow four weeks to process.

FAQ’S • Does it matter when I apply? • What is the difference between early decision and early action? • Is it better to apply early? • When will I hear back from schools? • Once admitted to a college or university, can a college withdraw an offer of admission?
Senior Checklist • Stay focused on academics (rigorous classes and grades) • Clean up Facebook account • Use an “appropriate” email address and monitor frequently • Retake SAT/ACT tests and send scores to colleges • Student athletes? Register with the NCAA clearinghouse • Schedule Admission Office interview if needed for private colleges
Senior Checklist (Continued) • Select a range of schools (safe, realistic, reach) • Open an “account” for each college application • Draft essays/short answers • Common app? “Invite” counselor and teachers for Secondary School Report and letter of recommendation forms • Attend upcoming events: • PNACAC National College Fair 11/15 (Seattle Convention Center) • Washington Colleges Fair at OC, November 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m. • College rep “visits” at CKHS • Campus “senior preview” days at some Colleges • Submit applications and supporting materials well before deadlines!
Junior Checklist • Take the PSAT Wed., Oct. 13th • Attend National College Fair Nov. 15th • Attend Washington Colleges Fair at OC, November 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m. • Take the SAT and/or ACT in the Spring • Be aware of college entrance requirements as you register for next year’s classes (you’ll need 3 credits of math – at least through Algebra 2)
Sophomore Checklist • Take the PSAT Oct. 13th • Take the PLAN Nov. 17th • Visit Colleges and ask questions • Plan your courses carefully! • For students graduating in 2013 or beyond, the new CADR requires a 4th year of math taken in the senior year. This requirements may also be satisfied by successful completion of Precalculus in the junior year or enrollment in an algebra-based science course in the senior year.
