Why forests ? • Everybody loves forests (think …) • Maybe 10 % of the public regard wood as the prime value from forests • Maybe 90 % love the forests for completely different reasons (e.g. frogs…)
Are the different views a problem ? • Not until the late 20th century • But controversies emerged in the 1970s • Multiple use forestry was the answer
The idea: Be aware of every single forest value & possibility • Recreation (walking, eating, hunting, fishing, riding, biking, climbing, playing…) • Spiritual values (silence, comtemplation, memories, traditions, landscapes) • Environment (wood, water, air, soil) • Biodiversity (animals, plants, ecosystems) • Employment (how about it?)
The next big areas where forests will add a major value • Rural development (e.g. tourism) • Water • Health • Education
What kind of forest owner is most suited for multiple use forestry ? • The many and diverse forest owners • …with personal love and responsability for their forest • …and a desire to develop it’s multiple values for future generations …
So the answer is … • Family forestry is the most suited form of forestry to bridge the gap between public desires and a sustainable use of all the forest’s values.
