  1. AIAA Public Policy John C. Rose Deputy Director, Public Policy Region 6 Chair, National Security, Public Policy Sub-Committee Regional Leadership Conference (RLC) Aug 7 & 8, 2014

  2. What is Public Policy??? Public Policy is when… “Individuals and/or groups attempt to shape policy through education, advocacy, or mobilization of interest groups.” Why it is important… “When there’s a vacuum of public input, lobbyists usually fill it. But when there’s public input, the people usually win.” Morgan Carroll – Colorado State Senator

  3. Perspectives on Public Policy and AIAA A Call to Participate! “The most important political office is that of the private citizen.” Louis D. Brandeis, Associate Justice, US Supreme Court “The time has arrived when engineers will have to venture out from the shelter and comfort of the Ivory Tower and enter the arena of boiling controversy, real-world debate, and -- brace yourselves -- politics. It is no longer viable to place our high-tech candle under a bushel, for at best we will find ourselves in darkness and at worst our bushel will go up in flames.” Norman R. Augustine, Retired CEO, Lockheed Martin (Comments at AIAA Summer Meeting, June 16, 1998) “Where are the AIAA-sponsored forums through which we can lead public-policy discussions concerning the appropriate balance of funding, direction, and regulation in the new public-private partnerships that are characteristic of today’s “commercial space” endeavors?” Mike Griffin, AIAA President, former NASA Administrator April 2012 Aerospace America

  7. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs! “Cuts on this scale would, in effect, be a decade-long modernization holiday,” Chuck Hagel, Sec Def, August 2013 “I strongly oppose cuts of that magnitude because, if they remain in place for FY 2014 and beyond, the size, readiness and technological superiority of our military will be reduced, placing at much greater risk the country’s ability to meet our current national security commitments,” Hagel said. "Make no mistake, the savings we are proposing will impact all 50 states and many districts across America,“ Leon Panetta, Sec Def, Jan 2012, Pentagon
