  2. Contents • Statistics • Purpose • Project scope • Implementation • Feasibility • System Overview • Questions

  3. Statistics • Over 10 million days lost per year due to musculo-skeletal absence per year (UK) • Millions spent on therapy and treatment • Reasons for back-pain or injuries among 13,808 people in Japan • Deskwork – 43.8% • Bad posture – 42.9%

  4. Purpose • Correct posture for computer usage • Reduced medical coverage • Increase overall health • Extensive add-on capabilities

  5. Project scope • Device connected to the computer and user • Detects whether user is in ideal posture or not • Warns user when deviating from ideal posture • Alarm system for extended computer usage • Tailored to each user’s individual needs

  6. Implementation • Hardware - SunSpot • One host device, two slave devices • Slave devices attached to user, possibly shoulder blades or chest idea • Accelerometer detecting change in posture • Host device connected to the computer • Wireless communication between host and slave

  7. Implementation (2) • Software • Programmed in Java • Detection algorithm for changes in accelerometer • Warning system • Timer • User interface to customize the Sunspot devices as well as the entire program

  8. Feasibility • Sunspot compatible with almost all platforms • User interface programmed in Java for easy integration • Source code control through Google code • Tasks divided between hardware and software
