  2. BEFORE WE BEGIN: • What is brainstorming? • What do you know a lot about? • What do you want to know a lot about? • Form a topic • My speech topic is the history of duct tape. • Dive in to the research!

  3. Audience Analysis • Why is audience analysis important? • What kinds of things should we think about? • What does your audience think about your topic? • How can you adapt your speech to overcome audience-centered barriers?

  4. Situational Analysis • Where are you giving your speech? • What unique barriers must you overcome due to your environment? • How can you adapt your speech to overcome environmental barriers?

  5. Put it on Paper! • You will turn in a paper outline for the next two speeches. • Full sentences. • Properly formatted. • Outlining is a key tool for academic success.

  6. Put it on Paper! • Introduction • Four parts • Attention getting step. • Topic and thesis step. • Credibility step. • Preview step. • Write it AFTER you write the body of your speech.

  7. Put it on Paper! • Body • Three to four main points • Space and time evenly divided. • Tell a story with your main points. • Include proper source citations! • Write this first!

  8. Put it on Paper! • Conclusion • Last part of speech, last part to write. • Summarize your main points. • End with a proper sense of closure.

  9. Giving Your Speech • Many speaking styles • Impromptu • Manuscript • Extemporaneous • Care about your speech! • Manage nervousness before and during your speech. • Speak with confidence! You’ve got this!
