Sexuality uncontrolled! Dr AsadSadiq, Consultant Psychiatrist
Human Sexuality • The most powerful and basic human drive alongside hunger • Don’t underestimate its’ power • Hidden in our culture/ society • Men & Women are very different in many respects, but very similar in terms of basic human drive
Problems in an unrestrained society • Free mixing • Schools • Unrestrained media • Television • Films/ Cinema • Books- Fifty Shades of Grey • Internet • Pornography
The Advantages of Pornography • Mostly free! • Nobody knows • Sexual appetite satisfied (linked to Masturbation) • Curiosity satisfied • No fear of rejection
Pornography Statistics • Almost 1/3 of Porn site visitors are female • 70% of 18-34 year olds view Porn at least once a month • 33% of 10 year olds have viewed online porn • 80% of 16 year olds regularly access online porn • 60% of 11-16 year olds have access to internet in their rooms • India- 67% of 13 year olds admitted to accessing Porn on their cell phones
Effects • Addiction • 5 to 6 hours per day • Affect academic performance • Affects sleep • Dopamine release (pleasure) • less sensitive to sexual images • harder to be turned on by reality • Seek out more extreme porn for same effect
Slippery Slide • Soft Core Porn- nudity etc • Hard Core Porn- penetration (act itself) • Deviations • Anal • BDSM etc. • Categorisation • Pregnancy • MILF / Grannies etc. • Child Pornography (Strictly illegal)
Ill effects of Porn addiction • Psychological problems • Depression/ Isolation • Attitudes to women • Objectification of women • Sexual problems • Orgasm associated with Pornographic images and cyber women and not with partners in loving relationships; therefore relationship with wife suffers
Attitudes (1) • It becomes about your pleasure and not the self-giving, mutually reciprocating intimacy that it was designed for • Problem is that society is hyper-sexualized • Girls/ women inundated with message that their most worthy attribute is their sexual hotness etc.- reduces their own view of themselves as anything other than sex objects
Attitudes (2) • 50% of women so ashamed of their own bodies that they need alcohol for sexual activity • In the Porn World- women never say no; never get pregnant, can’t wait to have sex with any man; please them in any way possible • Men are “soulless, unfeeling, amoral life-support systems for erect penises who are entitled to use women in any way they want” • No empathy, respect or love for women
Sexual Violence • 10% of women have been raped • 35% have been sexually assaulted • Almost ¼ reported rape/ sexual assault 4 or more times • 67% of cases women knew the rapist • 83% did not report it to the police • 29% didn’t tell anybody (not a soul)
What can we do? • Be careful with Smartphones/ Computers in bedrooms etc. • Internet filters • Talk about it with children (because if you don’t then society is giving them an alternative view) • Demonstrate respect for women
