(Greek philosopher) concluded that matter ran under the influence of Earth ,Wind, Fire, and Water. Earth, Wind, fire , water
Earth, wind, fire, water • Aside from his new theory, Empedocles added that amongst these four elements , fire and air are the elements that would be in upward direction, while earth and water are the opposite, meaning they are usually in a downward direction.
The Greeks didn’t do any experiments, so they didn’t have any experimental data. Right?? Their ideas and theories were based on thoughts
But the Greek philosophers still developed the idea that matter simply could not be constantly cut down into fraction after fraction, and they decided to call this indivisible matter “atom.”their idea remained only until 1800 ..when along came..
John Dalton proposed his solid sphere model. Dalton’s model showed that all compounds were made up of elements that combined in whole ratios! He really didn’t know how the atoms of these compounds combined Dalton agreed with the Greek philosophers that atoms were indivisible. His solid sphere model maintained a solid experiment for about a century until.. Solid sphere model
The Greeks and Dalton may have been correct about the atoms and their miniscule characteristic, but not until J.J Thompson’s cathode ray experiment had something to say about it. The cathode ray experiment was a success, it helped discover the electron!!! This disproved the idea that atoms were the smallest thing in the world, because these electrons took their spot… But nothing lasts forever, especially not Thompson’s idea, because about 20 years later came along… Plum pudding model
In Rutherford’s Gold Foil experiment he fired alpha particles, which carried a double positive, towards a thin layer of gold foil, and to Rutherford’s surprise, some alpha particles bounced back. In this experiment Rutherford discovered the nucleus, which contained both positive and negative charges. So the positive from the nucleus reacted with the double positive from the some of the alpha particles thus causing them to bounce back. Gold foil experiment
It took a very long time and perseverance for the discovery of the atoms, electrons, nucleus ,etc. but in the end, we are very advanced and there is still more to discover…. The atoms family
