The Internet: History • US Government project to connect DoD agencies, researchers, etc. • Started in 1969 with four nodes • Opened to commercial organizations in 1993 • Internet Backbone • Main fiber optic network linking nodes • Internet Servers • Computers linked directly to the backbone • Internet Service Providers • Businesses which provide access for individuals and organizations MIS 221

The Internet: Organization • Nodes are assigned unique IP addresses • E.g. 123.255.001.212 • Domain names correspond to IP addresses • E.g. www.csus.edu • Domain name servers translate names into IP addresses • Suffixes provide a loose categorization of nodes • .com, .org, .net, .gov, .mil, .uk MIS 221

  4. The Internet: Uses • The World Wide Web • File transfer • FTP • Email • Combined with FTP for file attachment transfer • Newsgroups • Chap • Telephony MIS 221

The World Wide Web • Multimedia hypertext on internet-connected computers • Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) • Standard for how to interpret text documents with imbed information about video, graphics, etc • Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) • Hypertext is text containing tags which refer to other files • Browsers: use HTTP to transmit, receive and interpret HTML files MIS 221

  6. Creating Web Sites • Use a web authoring tool (aka web page editor) • Create multiple pages and link them together • Publish resulting HTML files on a web server MIS 221

Other Web Topics • Java • Developed by Sun Microsystems to extend HTMP capabilities • Small pieces of code which are executed within HTML pages • Very portable • Used for animation, sound and e-commerce • XML • Defines type of data appearing in web pages • Could be very important to e-commerce MIS 221
